From his studies as an archivist in the Institute of Han Nom Research he now explores through his art the ramifications of a culture being lost through a script that is no longer read as Nom was replaced by the current Romanization of Vietnamese.

He also reflects on the unsettling ambiguity of using scripts introduced by conquerors firstly by the Chinese then the Latin script of the French We follow him unearthing ancient examples of the Nom scripts trying to find the original Vietnamese words behind them and then see him in his studio resurrecting the writing into a new art form and as a Vietnamese reclaiming his culture.

Installation exhibition by sculptor Tran Trong Linh

The artist says in the release, "We should not consider contemporary arts as something to look at only; we should look at it like a direct experience, creating a dialogue between the audience and the art works. An endless conversation…I see a conflict in economic development globally. From the subjective view, we can see that living standard has been improved significantly but we are not seeing the hidden instability underneath the development. I have chosen a way to create art by using an unstable material – ICE! A tower will be created to symbolize consumerism."

Entry to the exhibition is free.
L’Espace is located at
24 Trang Tien Street,
Hoan Kiem District,
Hanoi.

According to a press release from the French cultural center this week, this installation exhibition by sculptor Tran Trong Linh will be held between April 5 – 27 at L’Espace in Hanoi.
